What does a typical day look like for you?

There is no “typical” day in my life at this point – just the way I like it.  Upcycle opened a little over 3 weeks ago and getting a feel for the day to day is definitely going to be an ongoing process.  I not only own the studio, but right now I manage it, do all of our marketing, run the front desk and teach 8 classes a week.  Here’s what today looks like (it’s a long one):

  • 5:10am – alarm goes off; snooze.
  • 5:20am – snooze.
  • 5:30am – roll out of bed, throw some clothes on, wash my face, brush my hair, head downstairs to the studio to greet Christine, my instructor, and riders as they trickle in for the 6am class.
  • 6am – head back upstairs to snuggle back up with my boyfriend and our dogs for one more hour before we have to start our days (for real this time)
  • 7:30am – kiss Jake goodbye & head out for my morning walk with Zoe. We walk to the local coffee shop a few blocks away where I grab a latte and Zoe gets a treat (which she’ll carry around and hide in the apartment all day)
  • 8am – test out my new class playlist while making breakfast (if I can dance to it, I can spin to it)
  • 8:45am – back down to the studio to greet the 9am riders
  • 9am – teach! climb, sprint, sweat, repeat.
  • 10:15am – Clean the studio, set up for the noon class. Approve payroll, pay bills, update budgets and expenses.
  • 11:45am – Brandi, another one of my fabulous instructors, arrives to teach the noon class.  We greet the riders. I take Zoe out for walk #2 while Brandi kicks ass for 45 minutes.
  • 1pm to 4pm – “office work” time at the front desk – i finalize a merchandise order, finish planning a spin & yoga workshop for July, work on creating some graphics for our Facebook & Instagram, take inventory of cleaning supplies.  I scroll through Facebook aimlessly for about 10 minutes before I realize I’m wasting time and need to focus.  I vacuum and mop the studio while listening to my playlist for my 6pm class.
  • 4pm – 20-30 minute power nap. Without these, I would not survive.
  • 6pm – gears & beers! I teach a 60 minute class and then we hang out and drink a beer or two after. It’s always a good time and I get to meet and connect with so many fun people.
  • 8pm – clean up the studio for the night, close everything down, head upstairs for dinner. Walk Zoe.
  • 8:30pm – Epsom salt bath! By Friday night, my body is exhausted from the week – thankfully I don’t teach on Saturdays, so this is the time for my body to relax and recover.
  • 10pm – crawl into bed and fall asleep in a matter of seconds.

What are some interesting things that people probably do not know about you?

  •  I have a nail polish obsession but will only wear Essie – I currently have a collection of over 55 Essie shades.
  • I’ve had crazy odd jobs in the past ranging from racing pigs on a farm at a county fair to dressing up in Victorian garb and singing Christmas carols at big corporate holiday parties.
  • In college, I got to sing during Sunday mass at the Vatican.
  •  I average 15 spin classes a week now between teaching and taking them. I eat everything in sight and I’m still hungry ALL the time.
  • Besides spinning almost every day, I work out with a personal trainer twice a week (bonus: he’s very handsome and sleeps next to me every night).

Do you have any rituals/routines?

Honestly, I’m not one for routines. I never have been.  I’m more of a go-with-the-flow kinda girl.

What inspires you day to day?

People, ideas, the future.

How do you create?

From nothing.  I love creating from a completely blank slate – the possibilities are endless.

What can we find you daydreaming about?

The future; every aspect of it. and food. definitely food.

What are some of your favorite books/websites/apps/magazines?

Books: the fire starter sessions by Danielle Laporte.

Websites:  Refinery29, Etsy (I’m a sucker for handmade anything), and Pinterest.

Apps: Songza – I love that I can find new music based on my mood or what I’m doing.

What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?

If you want something to happen, make it happen. Don’t waste your life waiting for it to happen to you.

What does opening upcycle mean to you?

Absolutely everything.  This place is everything I’ve ever dreamed of without even knowing it.  About a year ago, I was feeling really stuck at work and wrote a list of non-negotiables for my dream job.  Every single thing on that list has come to life at upcycle.  I inspire others every day, I connect with like-minded people, I create space for people to get creative and test out their own crazy ideas, I get to work out whenever I want, I get to bring my dog to work with me and I get to learn and grow every single day.

This experience has taught me so much about not only starting up a business, but about myself, too.  Of course I’ve had those moments that everyone has when starting a business – the “am I doing the right thing?”  “Holy crap, I’m not going to have a steady income at all”, “what if I fail?”… “But darling, what if you fly?”

What’s in your coffee cup?

Daily: black coffee. The darker the better.

When I want to indulge: mocha latte with coconut milk.

I came across Ashley on instagram and instantly adored her style, social impact and expression.

What does your typical day look like?

Oh goodness, being in the independent creative field, everyday is truly different!  But each day usually starts with laying in bed for an extra few minutes to listen to the birds sing and think about the day ahead, a strong cup of coffee, and if I allow myself enough time I love to sit outside and breathe in the fresh air, then catch a late morning yoga class. If I’m traveling it’s usually wake, explore a new local coffee shop then out on the town/location to shoot all day and usually meet some pretty incredible people along the way. As for evenings, I love winding down my day with a sunset hike and/or make dinner and sip some good wine.

What are some interesting things that people probably do not know about you?

1.) I am mid-west born and raised from a tiny town in Iowa.

2.) One of my favorite things is going back to Iowa in the summer to go camping and fishing with cold beer and lay under the stars.

3.) I love all things granny chic 😉

4.) I am currently learning how to play the guitar

5.) A dive bar, jute box, and whiskey is my one of my favorite kind of nights on the town

Do you have any rituals/routines?

I think night time would be where my biggest routine comes in no matter where I am.  It’s my time to process my thoughts, and get alone time which is what re-fuels me.  A candle lit bath or shower with some of my favorite music playing, a cup of hot tea, and reading.

What inspires you day to day?

So many things.  My friends, family, my Ugandan family, the fact that everyone’s story is so different, music, nature, Los Angeles, native cultures and designs, horses, the circle of life, simplicity, traveling, meeting other creatives, old film photos, light, water color, just to name a few…

How do you create?

From within.  Creating has always been a matter of emotional connection or feeling to me.  Photography has been and always will be the way I express and connect what’s happening inside of me when I am capturing that moment.  No matter what is trending or floating around social media, I need to feel it.

What can we find you daydreaming about?

You sure you want to ask me that? Ha! I daydream about a lot of things.  Here are just a few..

-Having horses someday

-I recently bought my dream property on the Nile River in Uganda and hope to start building on it by the end of the year and I day dream about it being a home/sanctuary to share the land I love with loved ones, as well as sharing it as a yoga retreat where people can practice yoga looking over the Nile, fresh food, sunset kayaks on the river, and volunteer and integrate in to the local community all at the same time.

-Growing and constantly evolving in the company I co-founded with my business partner Nicole, called hazel & pine. We have so many visions and passion projects in the works and are beyond excited to announce them later this year.

-Creating life memories with family and friends, taking my nieces and nephews traveling when they are old enough. Oh, and a road trip with my grandma.

-Growing the non-profit The Farmhouse Project, I launched last year with my family in Uganda. We work with families to enable them to start a farm project as a small business in order to create a path to a sustainable life and provide the means to education for all of their children. I often dream about the day I drive down the road to see them independent and thriving as small business farmers.

I distinctly remember the first time I gracefully stumbled upon Kimberly Wilson’s website, I immediately felt at home.  Kimberly is a writer, yoga studio(s) owner, fashion designer, activist, mentor, animal lover, licensed graduate social worker and fellow Francophile. Whew. I’m sure I’m missing something…She has inspired me on so many levels and continues to do so through her blog and podcast. A true entrepreneur, leader and creative.

What does your typical day look like?

Ah, each day varies. From seeing therapy clients at the Women’s Center, to teaching at my yoga studios Tranquil Space, to writing or recording for my blog and podcast, to learning new skills {I have a slight addiction to continuing education}, to volunteering at hospice. I also spend a bit of time relaxing in bed or in the tub.

What are some interesting things that people probably do not know about you?

  • I’m from the Great Plains. Oklahoma to be exact.
  • I was voted “Most likely to have her own TV show” in college.
  • Here are 100 random things
  • I have a 7Eleven glazed donut addiction.

Do you have any routines/rituals?

I start my day with green tea, time with my pets, and a bit of stretching. Ideally some time with my journal, too. At night, I like to read or watch a true crime story segment {odd addiction}, and share something I’m grateful for from the day with my boyfriend.

pink palace

What inspires you day to day?

Waking up inspires me day to day. I strive to make each day a sensory-filled experience with fragrant green tea, candles, pink twinkle lights, my furry family, my beau of 11 years, and the work I put out into the world via the podcast, yoga studios, and blog.

How do you create?

Each day I’m creating–whether it’s writing, interviewing someone for my podcast, teaching, organizing the Pink Palace {my 600-square-foot home}, reading, or anything in between. Sometimes there’s a ritual for it such as spreading out my tools, lighting a candle, or opening my laptop after taking a few deep breaths. Oh, and there needs to be red lipstick and a dab of perfume oil.

What can we find you daydreaming about?

Paris, darling. Always Paris. And new sparkly offerings for Tranquility du Jour.

What are some of your favorite books/websites/apps/magazines?

  • I’m obsessed with books and have listed my favorites here.
  • J’adore the mindfulness app I and II for meditation bells.
  • Flow, Mindful, and Bella Grace magazines are my go-tos.

What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Trust your gut. When I haven’t over the years, I’ve paid a price. Overall, my gut has been my biggest teacher {although it does occasionally lead me astray when presented with Thin Mints}.

over coffee project: jacki carr

When I think of someone filled with joy, following their bliss and waking up every morning dedicated to living their life to the fullest, Jacki Carr is the first person that pops in!

What does your typical day look like?

A typical day, I can honestly say that I don’t have typical. I recently moved my big, beautiful life from Venice Beach to the Rocky Mountains of Denver! So let how about I tell you what today looks like. I was up at 5:17am to take my pups out, kiss my man good bye for work, sip butter coffee and get to the airport on time. I head to LAX to take a brand-consulting meeting in Carlsbad for the next two days. I will land down, rent a car and zoom over to Venice Beach to meet two coaching clients at TOMS Shoes Flagship Café on Abbott Kinney. From there, I pop in the car to try to beat the traffic towards San Diego and take a couple brainstorming calls in the car for my Imagine1Day: igolu Edition Ethiopia trip I am fundraising for in April! Check into my hotel and squeeze in a quick nap. Shower, get dressed and attend the brand design meeting for dinner, drinks and creative collaboration. A glass of red wine will be in order upon returning to my hotel bed, a call to say good night to my man and I will sleep really, really hard tonight.

What are some interesting things that people probably don’t know about you?

  • I am all over Doreen Virtue’s Angel Cards these days.
  • I may come across with a hard shell; yet I am pure putty on the inside, a total softie.
  • I know every word and the drum solo to John Mellencamp’s ‘Jack& Diane’ song.
  • I love peanut butter.
  • I have a tattoo on my right wrist that say ‘listen’. I needed a permanent reminder.
  • I cannot and will not watch scary movies, yet I can binge watch RomComs all day.
  • As a people person, starting your own business can feel lonely.

Do you have any rituals/routines?

I believe my sweat practice is my daily ritual. On a run, hiking a mountain or in a yoga class, this is where I get clear.  Most mornings I wake up slow with butter coffee and the Wall Street Journal. There is something magical about ink on the fingertips and big socks.  I want to write that meditation is in there, but I am only just beginning so I will keep you posted on my practice and moving it into the ritual category.

What inspires you day to day?

Right now, I am so inspired by my relationships.  As I embark on getting married and planning this major life event this year, I learned that I really have to lean. I am inspired by the way my fiancé loves me, with patience and the reminder to soften. I am inspired by my family, so engaged in my life planning and my future. And I am inspired by my tribe of radical friends who have booked flights, planned bachelorette parties and been a listening ear when I needed a shoulder and a glass of red wine. Inspired beyond by human connection, always.

How do you create?

I go live my life and truly choose the activities that bring me joy. My own life is a true reflection of how I am thriving or if/when in survival mode. The more creative I am, the more I know I have been living it well. And my personal stories really guide my blog content and leadership style. There is an accountability there to be in creation, living your work and tools to better land them for others. I love that responsibility and reminder to get out from behind the computer and go hike, meet a stranger at a coffee shop or adventure on a road trip.

What can we find you daydreaming about?

Oh goodness, I daydream often about my wedding (tying the knot in June!), my upcoming service trip to Africa with imagine1day, and my future children in our log cabin home going on hikes and being oh so outdoorsy.

What are some of your favorite books/websites/apps/magazines?

I am a total book nerd, you can check out my favorite on my book shelf over here. I love Brene Brown’s ‘Gifts of Imperfection’, Anodea Judith’s ‘Eastern Body, Western Mind’, and I am currently reading Diane Ackerman’s ‘A Natural History of Love’.  I love Outside Magazine, Fast Company and the WSJ.  Honestly, I love me some NPR and instagram for the app game.

What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?

The best advice I have ever been given was when my Mom wrote on a post-it note on my makeshift desk in my Santa Monica apartment, “Sometimes in life, you have to get lost to be found”.  For so long I thought I could create a direct path, know all the answers and set goals to create my ‘perfect’ future. I forgot that life happens when you are busy making plans and getting lost is part of the life game to know what you truly want and who truly brings you joy.  Thanks Mom!
