It’s not the pose, it’s the struggle

img_3902

Yoga is not about the pose. It’s not about holding handstand or doing some crazy arm balance or even being able to sit in pigeon comfortably for several minutes at a time.

It’s about the struggle along the way.

When I see someone take flight in their first bakasana, I’m so freaking excited for them not because they finally got the pose but because I know all the struggles they pushed through to get to that point. I know the hundreds of times they tried it, failed and tried again.  I know the time they put into it, the frustration they pushed passed and the countless times they might have told themselves they’ll never be able to do it.

Yoga is not about the pose, it’s about the struggle.

Lifting is not about the weight, it’s about the struggle.

It’s about finding something that is challenging for you and pushing yourself to 10 to get to where you want to be. Who cares what someone else lifts, who cares about all the crazy arm balances the person next to you in class can do.  Everyone has different struggles, everyone has different goals and as long as you can focus on yourself and push through the struggles, you’ll come out a better and stronger you.

7 Ways to Stop Moving Through the Motions

Sometimes life can feel like you’re on repeat. Just doing the same things day in and day out, just moving through the motions of life. Here are 7 ways to try to change that!

photo-1473743623983-d15c2bcb4da2

  1. Change Routes.   Morning commutes can be downright horrible. I know I have at least an hour drive to work each morning, and that’s on a good day. To mix things up every once in a while, I’ll take a different bridge into the city or try a different route to work. It’s a different view, different scenery. An easy way to mix things up every once in a while.
  2. Use your time wisely.   Speaking of commute, I try to use that hour drive to work as a way to learn something new or inspire myself. Which is why I choose to listen to podcasts instead of the radio. I love Tranquility Du Jour, Girlboss Radio, Politically Re-Active and my new favorite The Land of Desire: French History & Culture.
  3. Start saying No. How many times a month do you commit yourself to doing things that you really don’t want to do. You only say yes because you feel obligated to do so. Your time is valuable so start treating it as such. Start saying no more and don’t feel the need to give a long reason why. Just say “no, I’m sorry, I’m not available”. It’s that easy.
  4. Start saying Yes. This is not a contradiction to number 3. Start saying no to the things you don’t want to do, so you can start saying yes to the things that get you really excited. Say yes, but say it because you really want to.
  5. Don’t plan so much. When we over plan things, they can start to feel mundane. There is so much excitement and exhilaration in the unplanned. Take a day, go to your nearest city and just explore. No plans, not itinerary, just walk and go wherever you want to go. I love doing this in NYC. I pick one area in NYC and just walk. If I pass a store that looks interesting I go in, if I’m feeling hungry, I grab a bite to eat. Something fun and unexpected always happens, and if I would have planned my route I would have missed it.
  6. Step out of your comfort zone, get scared. We must always be testing ourselves and pushing ourselves outside of the box. How boring a life would be if we played it safe all the time. Remove the box you’ve created and push yourself outside of your comfort.
  7. Try something new. Cook a new recipe, try a new makeup style or a new hairdo. It doesn’t have to be extravagant, but try something new. Mix things up a bit.

Fitness Friday: 5 Exercises That Make You Feel Badass AF

You know the scene of any action movie after a huge explosion, and the main character walks away with just a little sweat, maybe a scrape under their eye, some dust on their shirt, but their hair still on point. They are feeling Badass AF.  That’s how these exercises below make you feel. Ok, I might be exaggerating a little bit but in all seriousness you’ll feel straight up strong.

Farmer Carries

I just started doing these to help build up my grip and forearm strength but dang these are awesome. Grab heavy dumbbells or kettlebells in each hand, pull your shoulders down your back and have a nice strong posture and just walk.  Seems easy but soon your forearms will start screaming and your fingers will start slipping.  For me, as someone who holds all of my stress in my shoulders and traps, this feels amazing with the weight pulling my shoulders down.  So go grab something heavy and get to walkin’!

Skull Crushers

If the name doesn’t make you feel badass enough, after your done these you’ll walk around feeling big AF. You know those people who hold their arms out way too wide because they think their muscles are gigantic? That will be you in the best way possible.

Kettlebell Snatch

There is something so powerful about snatching some heavy weight from the ground to above your head. At first glance it seems so easy, but at a deeper look, there are so many specifics and tiny details to getting the snatch down. And that is what makes this badass AF.  It’s all in the details.

Renegade Rows

So you’re in plank, which can be challenging all in itself, and then your lifting a dumbbell or kettlebell up with one hand in a row position. This is ninja warrior level badassness.  Core strength, upper body strength, mental focus, balance…it’s all there.

Deadlifts

I saved the best for last. Deadlifts are the ultimate badass exercise.  Nothing feels as badass as being able to lift a bunch of weight with such precision as the deadlift allows.  And quite frankly, if you’re a girl and you go to a typical commercial gym, you’ll surprise the hell out of high school boys who think girls can’t lift heavy.
